The Truth About the "No Poo" Hair Cleansing Method

Recently, I heard lots of hype about the “no-poo” method of cleansing hair. The name threw me off a bit at first, but after some research, I found out more about it and why so many women are making the switch for the benefit of their hair, as well as for the environment.

In short, “no poo” is not using the traditional shampoo found in many drugstores and supermarkets. This is where the “no poo” name comes from, since you’re not using the “poo” in shampoo. Traditional shampoos often contain many harsh sulfates, often as the main ingredient after water, which strip the hair of oils. Some of these oils are unnecessary, but others are natural and give hair the necessary shine and sleekness that it craves. Traditional shampoos can act as a detergent to your hair, removing all of these oils, which can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle. This process can also cause your hair to produce more oil than usual to compensate for the loss, which will continue to make your hair greasy.
To cleanse your hair using the “no poo” method, mix some baking soda with water in a spray bottle, spraying onto hair where and when you would normally shampoo. Begin the process by applying the product to your roots, then continue to gently massage it throughout your scalp. Allow the product to sit and absorb in your hair, then rinse with warm water to cleanse.
To replace the conditioning process, many “no poo” women use apple cider vinegar. Since conditioner was originally invented to replace the oils that shampoo often removes, a thorough conditioning of your hair isn’t necessary, since your hair doesn’t need the extra oils. This is the reason why vinegar does just enough for your hair.
If you’re used to the regular shampooing process, your hair will go through an adjustment period of transition with the new system. This means that your hair may be greasier than usual since you’re not stripping it of its necessary oils. Simply give the process a few weeks to take effect, and soon you’ll scalp and locks will feel normal again, and they will be much healthier!
The benefits of switching to “no poo” include more volume and shine to your hair, as well as additional smoothness. The environment and your wallet will benefit as well!

Have you tried “no poo,” or are you considering it? Do you have any advice or opinions?
